Sales & Marketing Management: Cold Calling Beats AI-Written Emails 6-to-1, Yet 39% of Sellers Fear the Phone

Qualified Prospect

The article highlights research from ValueSelling Associates and Selling Power revealing that cold calling remains significantly more effective than AI-written emails for B2B prospecting. In a survey of 153 sales leaders and representatives, 47% identified cold calling as effective, compared with just 8% for AI-assisted personalized emails. Client referrals ranked highest at 74%, reinforcing the importance of human relationships in sales. Despite these findings, many sellers struggle with phone prospecting. Forty-six percent of sales leaders report that representatives give up too easily, 40% cite difficulty handling objections, and 39% identify fear of picking up the phone. The research shows that advancements in AI and sales technology have not eliminated fundamental prospecting challenges. Instead, organizations must prioritize developing seller confidence, persistence, and communication skills through consistent training and coaching. AI can support prospect research and preparation, but meaningful human conversations remain essential for successful prospecting and revenue growth.
